Is the IronWolf Pro 32 TB right for you?
It earns the extra once you're filling a big box or hammering the array with Plex and backups around the clock, as the 550 TB a year rating leaves plenty of headroom. Five years of warranty is the other draw, and on a drive you'll leave spinning for most of a decade that's worth having. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.
Watch out for
It's a 7,200 rpm drive and you'll hear it working.
Backblaze doesn't run enough of these for a failure rate we'd publish. On paper it makes 28 dB at idle and 32 dB seeking. Seagate lists 6.8 W at idle and 8.3 W working, which comes to 60 kWh a year for a drive that idles around the clock. Put four in RAID 5 and you'll have 96 TB to fill (Windows will call it 87.3 TB).
