Is the IronWolf Pro 18 TB right for you?

This is the one to look at once you're past eight bays or the array's busy all day, because Seagate rates it for 550 TB a year and doesn't care how big the box is. You also get five years' warranty, two more than the cheapest NAS lines. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.

Watch out for

Being 7,200 rpm, it's in the noisier, warmer class of drive, and you'll want it somewhere you don't sit.

There's no Backblaze data worth quoting here. On paper it makes 20 dB at idle and 26 dB seeking. Seagate lists 5 W at idle and 7.5 W working, which comes to 44 kWh a year for a drive that idles around the clock. Four of them in SHR or RAID 5 give 54 TB usable, or 49.1 TB once Windows has done its binary maths on it.
