Byteshed is a small independent site for people filling a NAS or a home server, run by the Byteshed team. It tracks 30 hard drives and 40 NAS and DAS boxes, and every page is built from shop prices, the makers' own spec sheets and Backblaze's failure figures for 35 drive models.
Most of it is arithmetic. We work out the price per terabyte, the space you'll really have once parity has taken its share, and failure rates with their error bars, so a drive with one lucky year behind it doesn't get the credit.
The rankings come from rules written in code, and the method page sets them out with a version number and a dated list of changes. Shops can't pay to move a product up a list.
