Model DS725+
It's built for a mirror, two drives that each hold a full copy, and you can lose either one. The chip is an AMD Ryzen R1600. You can take it up to 32 GB of RAM (ECC, too) if you want to run VMs on it later.
If you need 10GbE, this isn't the box, as Synology lists no way to add it. A mirror costs you half the raw space, and with two bays the only way to grow is bigger drives.
Two M.2 slots too, and Synology's expansion units take it up to 7 bays when you run out of room.
These are decimal TB, the way drive boxes count them, and Windows will show roughly 9% less. Got a mix of sizes? Put your own drives in the calculator and it'll work out the layers.
| Each drive | Mirror (SHR or RAID 1) |
|---|---|
| 4 TB × 2 | 4 TB ≈ 3.6 TiB |
| 8 TB × 2 | 8 TB ≈ 7.3 TiB |
| 12 TB × 2 | 12 TB ≈ 10.9 TiB |
| 16 TB × 2 | 16 TB ≈ 14.6 TiB |
| 20 TB × 2 | 20 TB ≈ 18.2 TiB |
| 24 TB × 2 | 24 TB ≈ 21.8 TiB |
