Should you buy the WD Blue 8 TB?

A PC tower suits it, or a dock for backups.

Watch out for

WD doesn't rate it for NAS use at all, which rules it out for an array as far as we're concerned.

Backblaze doesn't run enough of these for a failure rate we'd publish. WD's datasheet puts it at 24 dB idle and 28 dB seeking. Power draw is 3.4 W idle and 5.2 W working on WD's figures, or 30 kWh a year if it spends the whole year idling.
