Is the WD Red Pro 14 TB right for you?

It earns the extra once you're filling a big box or hammering the array with Plex and backups around the clock, as the 550 TB a year rating leaves plenty of headroom. Five years of warranty is the other draw, and on a drive you'll leave spinning for most of a decade that's worth having. It's CMR, which is what you want anywhere near a RAID or ZFS rebuild.

Watch out for

It's a 7,200 rpm drive and you'll hear it working.

Backblaze doesn't run enough of these for a failure rate we'd publish. WD's datasheet puts it at 20 dB idle and 36 dB seeking. Power draw is 3.6 W idle and 6.4 W working on WD's figures, or 32 kWh a year if it spends the whole year idling. A 4-bay box full of these gives 42 TB after one drive's worth of parity.
