Is the MG11 14 TB right for you?

Pick it for raw capacity in a box that lives out of earshot, because 7,200 rpm enterprise drives are built to run flat out all day, every day. You also get five years' warranty, two more than the cheapest NAS lines. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.

Watch out for

It's a 7,200 rpm drive and you'll hear it working.

There's no Backblaze data worth quoting here. On paper it makes 20 dB at idle and 32 dB seeking. Toshiba lists 3.66 W at idle and 7.41 W working, which comes to 32 kWh a year for a drive that idles around the clock. Put four in RAID 5 and you'll have 42 TB to fill (Windows will call it 38.2 TB).
