Should you buy the IronWolf 1 TB?

Quiet beats fast for most home boxes, and at 5,400 rpm it's in the quieter class while still keeping a 1GbE link busy. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.

Watch out for

If there's any chance you'll move to a bigger box later, a pro line saves buying drives twice. Warranty's three years and the workload rating is 180 TB a year. At 1 TB that's 180 full passes of the drive a year, and a monthly scrub uses twelve of them before you've written anything.

No Backblaze failure rate for this one. They don't run enough of them, if any, for a figure worth quoting. On paper it makes 20 dB at idle and 21 dB seeking. Seagate lists 2.8 W at idle and 3.1 W working, which comes to 25 kWh a year for a drive that idles around the clock. A 4-bay box full of these gives 3 TB after one drive's worth of parity.
