Who the WD Purple 1 TB is for

If you're filling a camera recorder, this is what it's made for. We list it because surveillance drives show up in any price-per-TB hunt. For a NAS array, though, you'd be running it off its rating.

Watch out for

It isn't a NAS drive, and WD gives it no NAS bay rating. Building an array? Get a NAS or data-centre line, which comes with the rating.

No Backblaze failure rate for this one. They don't run enough of them, if any, for a figure worth quoting. On paper it makes 21 dB at idle and 26 dB seeking. WD lists 3.2 W at idle and 3.8 W working, which comes to 28 kWh a year for a drive that idles around the clock.
