Who the WD Ultrastar DC HC555 20 TB is for

Pick it for raw capacity in a box that lives out of earshot, because 7,200 rpm enterprise drives are built to run flat out all day, every day. Five years of warranty is the other draw, and on a drive you'll leave spinning for most of a decade that's worth having. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.

Watch out for

It's a 7,200 rpm drive and you'll hear it working.

There's no Backblaze data worth quoting here. On paper it makes 20 dB at idle and 32 dB seeking. WD lists 5.3 W at idle and 6.4 W working, which comes to 46 kWh a year for a drive that idles around the clock. Four of them in SHR or RAID 5 give 60 TB usable, or 54.6 TB once Windows has done its binary maths on it.
