Who the N300 16 TB is for

It suits a small NAS that's tucked away in a cupboard or under the stairs, where the extra pace of 7,200 rpm is welcome and the extra noise isn't your problem. CMR, thankfully. SMR and parity rebuilds don't get on.

Watch out for

If there's any chance you'll move to a bigger box later, a pro line saves buying drives twice. Warranty's three years and the workload rating is 180 TB a year. At 16 TB that's 11 full passes of the drive a year, and a monthly scrub uses twelve of them before you've written anything.

Backblaze doesn't run enough of these for a failure rate we'd publish. Power draw is 3.66 W idle and 6.94 W working on Toshiba's figures, or 32 kWh a year if it spends the whole year idling. Four of them in SHR or RAID 5 give 48 TB usable, or 43.7 TB once Windows has done its binary maths on it.
